The Lake Bluff Public Library is seeking a friendly and customer service-oriented person to work in our Youth Services department, which serves ages birth through high school. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver who enjoys working with children and caregivers and can think on their feet and thrive in a busy and constantly changing environment.


  • Assist patrons in locating library materials.
  • With training, answer reader’s advisory queries.
  • Promptly and accurately answer a variety of patron questions.
  • Assist with programming for Youth Services.
  • Create signs and promotional materials for Youth Services programs and events.
  • Troubleshoot basic problems with the public computers and equipment (resolving printer jams, saving information to flash drives, etc.)


  • Two years of college or current enrollment as a college student is preferred.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and Microsoft Office is required. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Canva, Publisher or other marketing and design tools is preferred, but not necessary.
  • This position involves a high level of contact with the public: excellent verbal communication is a must.
  • Previous library or customer service experience is not required, but will be considered favorably.
  • Knowledge of children’s and teens’ literature, and an interest in learning more!

Schaumburg Township District Library is seeking a dependable and responsible Computer Desk Assistant to serve our library and community by providing computer support and assistance to patrons. This position involves daily interaction with library users that have a variety of computer needs. The Computer Desk Assistant position is in the Reference Services Department of the Central Library located in Schaumburg.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate effective customer service skills to assist patrons using the public access computers. Proficient knowledge of Word, Internet, Email, connecting to Wi-Fi, printing, and scanning is required. Excel Formula knowledge is preferred. CA staff is responsible for registering students for classes in-person and over the phone, using a cash register, sending faxes, and setting up computer equipment in public meeting rooms. Availability to fill in for other shifts is preferred.

Hours: 15 hours per week Schedule:  Monday 9-2, Friday 9-2, Sunday 5 hours 12-5 or 1-6  (schedule subject to change)
Salary: $10.831-13.832/hourly *Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for the range.

Other part-time shelver positions work 15 hour (3-4 day week) and 20 hour (4 to 5 day week) shifts, with shifts typically spanning morning hours. Please apply for this position if you would like to be considered for either 10, 15 or 20 hour per week positions.​

NATURE OF WORKResponsible for ensuring library materials are re-shelved promptly and accurately.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Sorts and shelves books, periodicals, and other materials in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Verifies accuracy of books shelved including shelving order.
  • Provided assistance to patrons if asked and directs patrons to librarians and branch assistants as needed.
  • Provides customer service on a daily/regular basis.
  • Empties book drop, routes materials to and from other locations, and maintains reserve shelf.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORKMust possess a high school diploma or GED and one (1) or more years customer service related work experience.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of and ability to use Internet search engines, word processing software, email, on-line computer catalogs and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library, as well as the general public within the organization.
  • Ability to multi-task many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, newspapers, memos, letters, reports and legal documents.


  • The ability to work using full bodily movement associated with bending, kneeling, stretching, reaching, pushing, and pulling associated with shelving books and pushing a book cart. In addition to the ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 40 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes.
  • There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.

SUPERVISIONUnder the supervision of the Circulation Manager work is performed with the guidance of managerial staff. The individual has contact with other Library institutions and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele request. The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability and performance in accordance with this classification standard.

Part Time –  2 Shelver Positions
# 1 Position: 11 hours a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday – 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
# 2 Position: 10.5 hours a week: Thursday – 3p.m. – 6 p.m. ; Friday – 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Every other Sunday – 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

$10.30 per hour
Duties: This individual is responsible for shelving and/or sorting books, periodicals, and other library materials and making sure that materials are in proper order on designated carts.

They also maintain the orderly appearance of our library by clearing tables of books, periodicals, library materials and routinely “read” shelves to ensure materials are properly located including retrieving and shelving returned and “hold” items. They will also assist patrons with library equipment available for public use, empty book drops and may empty courier bins and will inspect materials for damage; referring damaged items to appropriate staff and check-in library materials.

Qualifications- Candidates must have skills in the following areas:

  • Sorting and filing alphabetically and numerically.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Following established routines.
  • Reading numbers and letters rapidly and accurately.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or Library goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Working with a variety of individuals.

Physical Demands: Mobility to work in a library setting, use standard office equipment and stamina to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time; strength to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and push carts that weigh up to 100 pounds; agility to bend, reach and climb; vision to read printed materials and computer screens; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
