Description: The Park Ridge Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to join our busy Circulation department. In this position you will be dealing directly with patrons and visitors. Candidates must have a positive attitude, work well in a team environment, and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

DUTIES: Greeting visitors; checking materials in and out; issuing and renewing library cards; collecting fees; answering the telephone and directing calls; processing holds for patrons; implementation and knowledge of circulation policies and procedures; other duties as assigned.

REQUIRES: High School Diploma or equivalent; excellent communication skills; commitment to outstanding customer service and teamwork; ability to lift 25 lbs. and push a book cart; must demonstrate basic computer competencies. Library experience and familiarity with SIRSI or POLARIS software preferred. See job description for complete list of requirements.

We are currently filling two positions, please indicate on application your preference of Schedule A or Schedule B. The schedules listed are preferred schedules but flexibility in scheduling will be given to candidates who we feel are a good fit for our team. SCHEDULE A or B:

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Head of Access Services and following departmental guidelines, performs a broad range of library tasks as part of the D’Angelo Law Library’s Access Services department. The Access Services Assistant has primary responsibility for staffing the Circulation Desk during weekday evenings and one weekend day during the academic year. The Assistant also participates in training, organizing, and overseeing the D’Angelo Access Services student staff and scheduling their work hours.

Scheduling Notes:
During the Summer Quarter and interim breaks, this position participates in a rotating schedule for Circulation Desk coverage. The person in this position must keep a regular work schedule and schedule accrued time off primarily during summer quarter and interim breaks.

During Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters, this position works the following weekly schedule: Monday – Thursday, 1:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., and either Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. OR Sunday, 1:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. (weekend schedule to be determined with the Head of Access Services).

Essential Functions


  • Provides exceptional patron service at the Circulation Desk during scheduled shifts, including charging and discharging Library materials, issuing passes and network credentials to visitors, picking up and re-shelving Library materials, and answering the telephone.
  • Responds promptly, accurately, and courteously to questions and requests for information from patrons and Library staff.
  • Communicates relevant patron inquiries and problems to supervisor and department colleagues.
  • Oversees the work of student employees at the circulation desk including training, directing, and scheduling desk hours.
  • Collects library fines.
  • Gathers, checks in, sorts, and boxes items returned to D’Angelo and prepares them for shelving or transit to other campus library locations.
  • Closes or opens the library staff area and the Circulation Desk during early morning and evening shifts and writes a circulation log at the end of evening shifts.
  • Prepares lists of items needed from the stacks for paging requests, Reserve, Scan & Deliver, and Interlibrary Loan requests and retrieves them from the stacks.
  • Scans library material for document delivery services.

Stacks Maintenance:

  • Directs student employees in stacks maintenance tasks, including shelving library materials, shelf-reading call numbers for accuracy, shifting books, cleaning shelves, and maintaining an overall order. Assists in performing these tasks as needed.
  • Coordinates and performs looseleaf filing; tracks updates to each looseleaf title and monitors filing accuracy.
  • Coordinates paging process for materials paged from D’Angelo and other libraries, including collecting and distributing requests, communicating with patrons, and retrieving materials.
  • Creates covers, transfers discs to locking cases, and performs additional processing for DVDs in the reserve collection.


  • Composes and promptly responds to work-related emails and other correspondence.
  • Monitors Knowledge Tracker account and resolves issues and responds to messages as appropriate.
  • Creates and maintains online content for the Library’s web site.
  • Documents procedures for position-related tasks and updates procedures manuals as needed.
  • Recommends changes in procedures and processes.
  • Gathers and maintains statistics and updates records.
  • Performs daily head counts.
  • Helps introduce new employees to library policies, procedures, programs, and equipment.
  • Creates signs.


  • Assists with other access services tasks, including reserves processing, searches, recalls, etc.
  • Assists with covering duties of other circulation staff members on vacation or absent.
  • Receives and signs for packages and ensures delivery to the appropriate Library staff member.
  • Participates in training related to job duties as deemed necessary by the Library.
  • Analyzes and resolves problems and recommends changes in procedures and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Related library experience, or an equivalent combination of position-related education and experience, required.
  • Significant related customer service experience within a library, retail, or similar environment handling public contacts with patience, courtesy, firmness, and diplomacy required.
  • Experience with library automated systems preferred.

  • Ability to perform paging duties required by the position, including walking to other campus libraries and retrieving books from bookstacks and bringing them back to D’Angelo required.
