The Highwood Public Library is looking for someone to work between 15 to 20 hours per week as an Assistant Children’s and Young Adult Librarian. The position is responsible for helping with: answering patron questions; planning, marketing and overseeing children’s and young adult programming; maintaining the children’s and young adult collections through selection, purchasing and weeding of those collections; maintaining the appropriate sections of the library’s website; maintaining the library’s facebook page; collecting statistics; and acting as the librarian-in-charge when needed.

The ideal candidate will have an MLS or be in the process of attaining one. Candidates must also be proficient with MS products, especially Windows and Office; have excellent customer service skills; and be able to work evenings and weekends. Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Primary duties include: staffing the Youth Services public desk to provide reference and readers’ advisory services, assisting patrons with participation in our many programs and activities, managing some areas of the collection, participating in our Summer Reading Club committees, attending monthly department and library meetings, and planning and executing or hosting programs.

Spanish and/or Polish language skills are definitely a plus, but please be sure to indicate any additional languages. The local school district reports over 60 different languages are spoken in our community’s homes.

Minimum qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and one year library work experience with children

two years college and three years library experience with children.

Position 1

20-hour position:

Monday 4:00 – 9:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., plus Saturday/Sunday in a weekend rotation. *Benefits 20 hour position includes IMRF and one week vacation.

Position 2

15-hour position:

Monday 1:30 – 5:30 p.m., Thursday 5:30 – 9:00 p.m., alternating Friday/Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
