Robert Rowe Public Library District is seeking an enthusiastic out going, positive person with great customer service skills to work part-time as a Young Adult programmer and basic data entry. Experience in doing programming for young adult ages 12-18 years of age preferred. Perform a variety of tasks regarding young adult programming, and perform duties at a busy Circulation Desk, includes but not limited to: greeting customers, assist library users in locating materials, checking materials in and out, registering new patrons, answering the phone, mouse and keyboard use, and other duties as requested to support circulation/lending and general library operations. Must be able to pass Barcode Exam within 6 months of beginning employment. Young adult programming includes providing reference and reader’s advisory to YA, assisting patrons, programming preparation, scheduling, displays, implementation, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Friendly, energetic, detail oriented person with excellent communication skills; must enjoy working with the public and have a positive customer service attitude.
Education: HS diploma required as well as computer proficiency and physical skills. Teacher’s aide or LTA preferred. Internet knowledge, previous library working experience is a must. Working knowledge of e-readers is preferred.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for supporting the complex metadata needs of the library. This position performs original cataloging, copy cataloging, and recataloging for all types of serials. Creates and revises authority records for names and series headings. Works with colleagues on problem solving and other difficult serials work, and contributes to local procedure documentation.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Performs copy cataloging in OCLC and Alma, for serials at varying levels of difficulty, in print, microform, and electronic formats and in all subject areas (20%)
  • Performs full-level original cataloging in OCLC and Alma, for serials in print, microform, and electronic formats and in all subject areas (20%)
  • Recatalogs materials and revises existing local records to reflect changes in the publication or local holdings, or to correct information (15%)
  • Cataloging tasks for original, copy, and recataloging include:
  • Adds new bibliographic, holdings, and item records to Alma
  • Independently contributes authentication and maintenance transactions for the library’s participation in the CONSER program
  • Follows standards and guidelines found in RDA, LC-PCC Policy Statements, CONSER Editing Guide, CONSER Cataloging Manual, Subject Cataloging Manual, and local documentation
  • Assigns Library of Congress subject headings, and assigns call numbers using Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Classification and Shelflisting Manual, and/or local schemes
  • Performs difficult problem solving arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic and holdings records
  • Keeps current on revisions to guidelines and trends in cataloging practices and applies new guidelines and brings changes to the attention of others as appropriate for discussion
  • Routinely monitors such materials as LC-PCC PSs, updates to the MARC formats, CONSER documents, and email discussion groups, such as AUTOCAT and SERIALST
  • Verifies name, series, and subject headings against authority file
  • Independently prepares and revises name and series authority records submitted to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging
  • Participates in special metadata projects as appropriate, including but not limited to cataloging of hidden collections, recataloging of library holdings, or ensuring accuracy of library holdings in external databases
  • Creates and maintains documentation as needed
  • Provides training as required
  • Participates in departmental meetings and deliberations
  • May participate on library-wide committees and task forces
  • Assists other staff and colleagues with serials-related questions as needed
  • Communicates with library staff regarding serials workflows
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired
  • 5 years’ library experience or other relevant experience required. At least 3 years of cataloging or indexing experience in a library using Resource Description and Access (RDA), national-level interpretations of RDA, and Library of Congress Classification
  • Experience with a library service platform or integrated library system, preferably Alma and OCLC
  • Experience working with serial publications
