Description: Position available in our fast-paced Customer Relations Department at our Main Library facility. Job duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing library material check-in and check-outs, renewals, holds, and customer library card registrations
  • Providing information to customers, answering questions, and being proactive with offering assistance in a friendly and professional manner
  • Receiving and recording customer fines
  • Using technology and digital resources to assist patrons with electronic platforms
  • Answering telephone calls and providing routine information or referring calls to appropriate departments
  • Assisting with shelf reading and shelving of materials.


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Some knowledge of library clerical procedures and practices
  • Experience in a customer service environment
  • Basic math skills and ability to alphabetize
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred

Fountaindale Public Library District, which proudly serves the diverse community of Bolingbrook, Illinois, is seeking an experienced individual to perform all duties necessary to provide effective patron assistance with account setup, maintenance and general inquiries.

Duties: To coordinate and oversee the tasks and daily assignments of the Circulation Services Specialists and assist the Circulation Services Assistant Manager. Performs all duties necessary to provide effective patron assistance with account setup, maintenance and inquiries. Provides consistent, gracious and friendly service to internal and external customers. Understands and enforces library policies and procedures while safeguarding intellectual freedom and patron privacy. Acts as department lead on assigned evenings/weekends as well as in absence of Circulation Services Assistant Manager and Circulation Services Manager. Responsible for opening and/or closing of department, including reconciling daily cash drawers. Works with Circulation Services Management team to create, document and implement departmental procedures. In conjunction with Finance Office, reconciles accounts payable/receivable for non-consortial libraries’ lost/damaged materials. Responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting and reporting Automated Materials Handling (AMH) system malfunctions as needed. Works remotely with AMH support as needed. Liaison to Collection Agency regarding patron accounts. Prepares and submits required records, reports and statistics in keeping with the policies and procedures of the library. Performs work of Circulation Services Specialists as needed or assigned. Participates in library committees for special interests and events. Serves as building responsibility lead. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Requires expertise acquired through completion of an LA/LTA certification in an Associate’s degree program or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of two years customer service experience in a library setting.

Skills: Office & Library Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks. Basic knowledge of productivity suites and integrated library systems. Demonstrates strong leadership and enthusiastically cultivates positive working relationships within a team environment.

Ability to exercise reasonable and independent judgment and discretion. Ability to adapt to and effectively implement change. Ability to effectively use a variety of tablets and similar devices.

Communication: Communicates effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Speaking skills in other languages, particularly Spanish, is a plus. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and public. Ability to stay calm and effective in difficult situations. Ability to empathize and relate to the needs of all patrons. Ability to adapt to change.

Supervisory Responsibility: Position acts as departmental lead in absence of Circulation Services Manager and Circulation Services Assistant Manager.

Contacts: Internal-Library staff and management. External-Patrons, vendors, school personnel, community organizations and personnel at other libraries.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job. Physical requirements include: good speaking, hearing and vision ability, ability to push carts of library materials weighing up to 100 pounds frequently, lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently. Will require standing for prolonged periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a typical library environment. Full-time position which requires some weekend and evening work.

Required to spend long periods of time at a computer monitor and keyboard with some exposure to electromagnetic fields from video displays. Must have the visual acuity to read computer screens.
