The Westmont Public Library is seeking an energetic, detail oriented team player to join our Tech Services team. The Acquisitions and Receiving Associate will order and receive new material for the library collection.
Duties include creating on-order and pre-cat records in our library database, tracking appropriate billing information, reconciling order totals with invoices, unpacking boxes of new material, and communicating with vendors regarding damaged or defective items. This is an excellent opportunity for a MLIS student pursuing materials administration or a seasoned LTA!
At WPL we value collaboration and the synergy generated by a positive, friendly environment. A good sense of humor is a must! In addition to departmental responsibilities, staff members have opportunities to participate on committees and represent the library at special events.
The successful candidate must have exemplary communication skills, sufficient computer experience to perform duties quickly and accurately, and be able to set priorities and work independently. Physical qualifications include the ability reach, bend and lift to shelve and retrieve materials.
Position is 19.5 hours per week. Benefits include vacation time, sick leave, and paid holidays. Schedule is negotiable but some evenings and weekends may be required. Starting salary is $11.00/hour.

This position is responsible for staffing the Circulation area of the Library, and performing all the functions associated with that area. Responsibilities

  • Greets and assists Library users in the Circulation areas employing effective customer service skills.

Duties

  • Checks in, checks out and renews Library materials.
  • Informs Library users of the status of their Library records.
  • Processes applications for, and issues, new Library cards.
  • May assist Library users in locating materials.
  • Fields requests for new acquisitions and Interlibrary Loans.
  • Assists Library users in using library resources.
  • Receives phone calls, and assists or transfers calls as necessary.
  • Processes new library materials for circulation; repairs damaged materials.
  • Shelves Library materials; shelf reads and keeps materials in good order.
  • Performs or assists in Library opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists in seeing that Library rules of conduct are observed by asking Library users to observe rules of conduct that are not being followed, and by informing Library administration when necessary.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • Library skills sufficient to accomplish the duties listed above, “transferable” skills, or the ability to learn those skills. In particular, the ability to learn the use of the Dewey classification system, and other Library procedures is required.
  • Computer skills sufficient to perform the functions of the online catalog and circulation modules of the Library’s automated Library system.
  • Excellent public service skills are essential.
  • Good clerical skills are required, including keyboarding.

Nature of Work/Essential Functions:

Using excellent customer service skills, assist patrons at the circulation desk by answering questions, providing directions, checking in and out library materials as well as processing registration, fines and fees.

Specific assignment will include some or all of the following:

  • Assist patrons at the circulation desk by using the computer system to check in/out and renew library materials and resolve problems.
  • Accept fines and fees from patrons using a cash register and credit card machine.
  • Handle incoming circulation desk phone calls with a high level of customer service.
  • Provide exceptional customer service on a daily basis.
  • Provide library assistance in the area of filing and shelving on an as needed basis.
  • Assist patrons with library card registration and renewal.
  • Answer general information and directional questions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED and must possess one (1) or more years of customer service related working experience.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
    • Proficiency with Internet search engines, word processing software, email, on-line computer catalogs and Windows operating systems.
    • Ability to promptly sort and file materials in alpha-numerical order.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library, as well as the general public within the organization.
    • Ability to multi-task many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
    • Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, blogs, social media, memos, letters, reports and legal documents.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

    • There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.
    • The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes.
    • The ability to stand for at least four hours at a time.
    • The ability to work while standing as well as bodily movement associated with bending, kneeling, stretching and reaching associated with checking in/out books. The ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 40 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

SUPERVISION:

Under the supervision of the Circulation Manager, work is performed with the guidance of managerial staff. The individual has contact with other Library institutions and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele request. The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service and performance in accordance with this classification standard.

Des Plaines P.L.-Summer Reading Club Preschool Outreach Intern
