Sycamore Public Library is accepting applications for the position of Head of Adult Services. This is a full-time, professional level position responsible for the development and implementation of a full range of library services geared towards adults.

This position requires an excellent understanding of community needs, as well as an extensive knowledge of library services, principles, practices and procedures, and an in depth knowledge of adult literature. This position requires both a high degree of independent initiative as well as an ability to coordinate with others and to manage a team. The Head of Adult Services manages a staff of 4 library assistants.

Salary: $20.50-$22.00 hourly, plus individual benefits package, IMRF eligible.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; MLIS from an accredited college or university preferred
  • 3+ years of professional library experience
  • Strong supervisory or management skills strongly desired
  • Programming, budgeting, collection management, and community outreach experience desired.


  • Manages the Adult Services Department, setting goals, assessing performance, and providing reports and statistics as required by the Director.
  • Develops a proposed budget to meet the Department’s goals.
  • Selects, purchases and weeds adult materials in accordance with professional standards and the library’s Collection Development Policy.
  • Develops and implements a variety of programs and special events that capture the interest of adults in the community.
  • Coordinates marketing and promotion of all departmental programs with the Events and Marketing Coordinator.
  • Seeks external funds, including donations and grants, to support adult services.
  • Exhibits initiative and professionalism in seeking out, developing, and maintaining effective relationships with local businesses and other community agencies.
  • Works to create a clean and organized environment that is appealing to the community.
