The purpose of this full-time position is to manage the Youth Services and Adult Department Circulation Shelving Staff and to assist the Circulation Manager with the management of the Circulation Department. Contributes to the attainment of department and Library goals and objectives through compliance with Library policies and procedures.


1. Manages Circulation Shelving Staff (45%)

Interviews, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates Circulation Shelving Staff.

Develops and updates staffing recommendations

Develops and updates job descriptions with the HR Manager.

Maintains Circulation Shelving Staff procedures manual.

Advises Circulation Manager of status and staffing and budget needs.

2. Assists Circulation Manager with management of Circulation Department (40%)

Maintains expertise in application and use of Library’s ILS.

Performs routine circulation desk activities minimum 6 hours/week.

Troubleshoots automated circulation problems.

Knows Circulation Assistant B tasks and can substitute for them as needed.

Supervises maintenance of public bulletin board and literature rack.

Assists with development of annual budget and annual report.

Mentors staff in the areas of Customer Service and circulation software functions.

Responsible for maintaining a positive attitude conducive to offering great customer service resulting in a pleasant patron experience

3. Oversees physical maintenance of materials collection (10%)

Monitors shelf capacity and makes adjustments as necessary.

Makes recommendations to appropriate staff about current and future shelving space needs.

Determines need and schedules cleaning of AV materials.

Keeps appropriate staff apprised of any selection issues that affect shelving capacity and arrangement (e.g., impact of duplicate copies, cataloging and labeling practices, etc).

Serves as liaison with appropriate vendors.

4. Participates in relevant professional activities (5%)

Attends Library and departmental meetings, training and continuing education workshops as specified in Library policies and departmental goals.

Stays informed through professional literature.

Attends relevant circulation meetings.

Work Environment – This position operation in an office environment and routinely requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand as necessary.

Required Education & Experience

  • BA from accredited college or university
  • Minimum 1-year experience with library automated circulation system
  • Minimum 1-year supervisory experience with comparable size staff
  • Pleasant and courteous manner
  • Excellent public service attitude
