POSITION OVERVIEW: A professional public services position under the administration of the Head of Adult Services. Responsible for performing reference and readers’ advisory services to adults and teens, collection development, and programming as a member of the Adult Services team. This is a non-exempt position. Level 3

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides consistent, gracious and friendly service to internal and external customers.
  2. Understands and applies the library policies and procedures while safeguarding confidential and restricted information.
  3. Regularly works the Adult Services desk.
  4. Plan and present programming for adults.
  5. Participate in outreach events.
  6. Provide readers advisory for all patrons, especially adults and teens.
  7. Provide reference assistance for all patrons, especially adults and teens.
  8. Select and maintain assigned collections.
  9. Contribute to the library’s online presence by updating social media outlets.
  10. Participates in continuing education activities.
  11. Assist in the preparation of the department’s publicity, including newsletters, displays, news releases and fliers.
  12. Maintain order and discipline in the Adult Department.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to empathize and relate to the needs of all patrons, especially children and teens while remaining calm and effective in difficult situations.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and public.
  3. Ability to make decisions within the library’s guidelines and policies and within the parameters of the department keeping the head of the department informed.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  5. Knowledge of public library adult and teen services principles, practices and technology including automated systems.
  6. Ability to exercise reasonable and independent judgment and discretion.
  7. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability to think creatively.
  8. Knowledge of adult and teen literature.
  9. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  10. Knowledge of and ability to use PC’s and various hardware/software applications.
  11. Ability to learn new technology programs and operations as they are developed.
  12. Ability to perform advanced internet searching.
  13. Knowledge of electronic resources.
  14. Ability to conduct a reference interview.
  15. Ability to adapt to and effectively implement change.
  16. Ability to use a variety of office equipment.
  17. Ability to bend, stoop, lift and carry.
  18. Ability to push a fully loaded book cart.
  19. Ability to speak Spanish considered a plus.
