About the Unit
Unit Job Summary

This position oversees the lending of materials from Regenstein Bookstacks and Regenstein Reserve. Also responsible for answering patron questions about Access Services and serving as resource for questions about other Library services. During evenings/weekends, oversees Entry/Exit staff, acts as the supervisor in charge of the Regenstein Library, oversees building security, and enforces policies for maintaining a scholarly environment in the Library. Works closely with the Head of Circulation Services and other Circulation Services supervisors to ensure consistent services.

Scheduling Note:
This position covers all circulation shifts as assigned. Responsible for occasionally flexing work schedule to cover other shifts as necessary. Works flexible schedule during interim breaks. The expectation is that time off will not be taken during the first two weeks or the last two weeks of an academic quarter. Schedule is subject to change.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Customer Service and Interpretation of Library Policies to Patrons:
Answers inquiries concerning overdue books, recalls, reserve problems, and fines both in person and via Desk Tracker.
Listens to patrons with special problems or complaints and attempts to resolve problems as appropriate.
Interprets Library policies to patrons and refers patrons’ concerns to Head of Circulation Services when appropriate.
Responsible for collecting fines and fees and balancing cash collected while on duty.
Troubleshoots Canon multi-functional devices.

Supervising, Coaching, and Documenting:
Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and coordinates scheduling the evening Reserves and Circulation Asst.
Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and coordinates scheduling for student counter attendants, a shared and/or rotating responsibility with two part-time Circulation Supervisors.
Distributes work to and monitors work done by student employees.
Coaches and directs student employees in maintaining Circulation policies and procedures and standards of service.
Uses When To Work to adjust student schedules and record/communicate student employee information.
Conducts routine orientation, training, and remedial training of student employees.
Maintains training records and monitors student employees’ progress and reports to Head of Circulation.
Documents and updates Circulation procedures.
Monitors, approves, and submits all documentation related to student counter attendants’ payroll, a shared and/or rotating responsibility with two part-time Circulation Supervisors.
Assists with documenting and reviewing performance of student counter attendants.

Supervisor in Charge of Building Security and Emergency Response:
During evenings/weekends, acts as supervisor in charge of Regenstein Library and oversees building security.
Acts as resource for other campus libraries.
Enforces policies for maintaining scholarly environment.
Provides initial response to emergencies.
Assists patrons in contacting University Police.
Handles general inquires relating to building and security.

Entry/ Exit Desk Responsibilities:
Oversees Entry/Exit staff during evenings/weekends and ensures timely coverage of breaks.
Resolves problems and appeals from users on Entry/Exit questions.
Reports issues to Head of the ID and Privileges Office.
Oversees application of rules and procedures for Library access during evenings/weekends.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience:
A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a library or equivalent environment required.
Previous experience directing or supervising the work of others required.
Significant customer service experience required.
Competencies
Ability to exercise good judgment consistent with Library policies and procedures and service standards required.
Ability to train, coach, and direct student counter attendants in Library policies and procedures required.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage and maintain professional relationships and communicate with clarity, courtesy, and tact with patrons, staff, students, faculty, and others required.
Ability to identify and solve problems required.
Good organizational skills required.
Ability to manage time and multiple tasks in a fast paced environment required.
Reliably able to work independently during evenings/weekends as the sole supervisor in a large academic library required.
Knowledge and experience with computer applications such as MS Office, email, and Internet, required.
Strong oral and written communication skills required.

Knowledge of integrated library systems preferred.
