Fountaindale Public Library District, which proudly serves the diverse community of Bolingbrook, Illinois, is seeking an experienced individual to perform all duties necessary to provide effective patron services to District residents with our 32′ Bookmobile that makes stops at preschools, elementary schools, community stops and senior facilities. Outreach Services also provides home delivery service to anyone in the community who cannot get to the library for any reason. Our talented Outreach Specialists provide
book talks at elementary schools, and storytimes to preschools, Panera Bread, McDonald’s and Chick-Fil-A.

The successful candidate will provide patrons with reference services, reader’s advisory, and programming primarily outside of the library. The Library is in the process of acquiring a second vehicle to enhance Outreach Services on the road.

Duties:

  • Provides consistent, gracious and friendly service to internal and external customers.
  • Understands and enforces library policies and procedures while safeguarding intellectual freedom and patron privacy.
  • Performs all duties of Outreach Services department including driving and working on the
    Bookmobile, attending Outreach community events, providing reference and reader’s advisory services, classroom material collections, patron account help, and general circulation.
  • Refers advanced reference requests to department Manager.
  • Plans, prepares and conducts Outreach programs and cross-departmental programs for elementary schools, preschools, senior facilities, homeschool, homebound and other groups as assigned to promote the services of the library; assists Manager with annual library card promotion to teachers and students.
  • Plans, prepares, contributes to and/or creates displays, bibliographies, flyers, blogs and other print or online library promotional materials.
  • Assists in maintenance of Outreach collections as assigned, including the inventory, stocking and shelving of materials. Recommends library materials to purchase for the Outreach collections.
  • Retrieves items from the Community book drops, as assigned.
  • Leads or participates in library wide committees for special projects, strategic planning, new library initiatives, departmental development, and consortia wide development.
  • Serve as liaison for library in programming initiatives with external agencies.
  • Prepares and submits required records, purchase requests, and reports in keeping with the policies and procedures of the library.
  • Collects daily statistics and prepares monthly departmental statistical reports.
  • Keeps informed of current information and trends at the local and regional level.
  • Participates in professional development activities relating to areas of responsibility.
  • Takes bookmobile for maintenance, as assigned.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Requires expertise acquired through of an LA/LTA certification in an Associate’s degree program or equivalent, or a two year degree in Child Development.

Experience: At least one year experience in a comparable business, school, organization, or library preferred.

  • Skills:
    Office & Library
    Basic knowledge of children’s, teen, and adult literature, popular materials and reference materials in a variety of formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to tell, read and interpret stories for children.
  • Basic knowledge of productivity suites and integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge of current technology trends, reference techniques and digital information retrieval.
  • Ability to incorporate technology into programming and other public services. Ability to exercise reasonable and independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data to produce new or revised processes and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively use a variety of tablets and similar devices.
  • Ability to adapt to change.

Driving
Must obtain and maintain a valid class C Illinois driver’s license within 90 days of hire.

Communication:

  • Communicates effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Speaking skills in other languages, particularly Spanish, is a plus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and public.
  • Ability to stay calm and effective in difficult situations.
  • Ability to empathize and relate to the needs of all patrons, especially children and their caregivers.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job. Physical requirements include: good speaking, hearing and vision ability, ability to push carts of library materials weighing up to 100 pounds daily, lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds daily and up to 20 pounds frequently. Will require standing for prolonged periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a bookmobile and other vehicles as well as a typical library environment. Will be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Requires some weekend and evening work.
