Part Time
Up to 18 hours per week. Must be willing to work Monday and Wednesday from 5pm to 9pm and a monthly Saturday rotation.

Due to an internal promotion, we are again seeking a part-time Reference Assistant. This would be a great opportunity for someone with a public library background or a current MLIS student looking for reference experience.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, knowledgeable in technology with excellent customer service skills and a sense of humor. Candidates for this position will be expected to assist patrons at the reference desk with computer related inquiries, reference, and reader’s advisory questions. In addition, the qualified individual will be performing collection development duties in assigned areas that may include print, a/v, and our Spanish language collection. General knowledge of various e-reader devices, including iPads, Tablets, mobile phones, etc. will be expected to work with patrons individually in the use of these devices. Someone with strong artistic skills who can implement new programs of interest to our community would be highly considered.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to Blue Island Public Library users
2. Promotes our collections and services by creating flyers, posters, and other promotional, material
3. Provides services to special populations such as blind, physically handicapped, non-English speakers
4. Makes recommendations for services to special groups or with new technology
5. Maintains the prevalence and completeness of collections of Reference materials, such as telephone books, government forms, and other items
6. Reviews and recommends print and non-print materials for selection to be added to the general and specialized adult collections of the Library, using standard selection media and procedures
7. Assists in the review, selection and recommendation of materials for withdrawal and/or repair
8. Arranges for displays and exhibits in the Reference Department
9. Assists in the development of, in cooperation with the Library Director, Reference Manager and others, adult programs to supplement the basic functions of the Library and publicizing these programs
10. Participates in social media outreach on the Library’s behalf
11. Offers both tutoring and workshops on basic and new technologies
12. All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Qualifications:
Education: Associates Degree required, BA/BS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited university preferred

Physical Demands:
Ability to maneuver book carts weighing up to 75 lbs.
Walking, sitting, standing, sometimes for extended periods of time
Utilizing a computer, sometimes for extended periods of time

Preferred: Spanish language skills, library experience, or candidates pursuing their MLIS.

The Blue Island Public Library serves a wonderfully diverse population of approximately 23,000 and enjoys tremendous community support as well as the support of a dedicated Friends of the Library group and invested Trustees. The Library is a member of SWAN (70+ libraries sharing resources, using SirsiDynix Symphony) and RAILS (all libraries in northern Illinois).
