General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Acquisitions & E-Resources Librarian, the Acquisitions and Resources Assistant is responsible for maintenance of and resolving issues concerning description, holdings, receipt, use, and access of electronic and continuing resources. Acquisitions and Resources Assistant is also responsible for the binding of physical library materials in all formats.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Electronic and Continuing Resources Processing:
    • Setting and maintaining electronic and continuing resource subscription, cataloging/description, holdings, receipt, access, and use information in cataloging, vendor systems, link resolver, knowledge base, electronic resource management, and other discovery & management systems, including providing copy cataloging and bibliographic and holdings record updates and processing cataloging record set loading for ongoing electronic and continuing resources.
    • Resolve electronic and continuing resources subscription/acquisitions, receipts, returns, cataloging/description, holdings, access, and use problems, including contacting vendors and publishers as needed.
    • Processing materials for collection management including transfer between locations such as the Library’s Offsite Shelving location.
  • Binding:
    • Handle the preparation and receipt of library material binding and commercial/in-house repair including collation of issues and volumes to be bound. Selecting the appropriate binding method. Charging items to appropriate staff-use patron account(s). Entering data into bindery vendor’s online system. Sorting and packing library materials in all formats. Checking returned shipments for errors.
    • Communicating with bindery representative(s) concerning problems and updating holdings information in online systems.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants to complete electronic and continuing resources work-flow duties, binding tasks, and department projects as assigned.
  • Technical Services and Collection Management Initiatives:
    • Communicate and work cooperatively with the Acquisitions & E-Resources Librarian  and other appropriate library staff to perform Technical Services and collection management work as needed, including projects involving data clean-up, de-accessioning materials, determining settings to process new cataloging record sets, and so on.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with electronic or continuing resources in an academic library.
Preferred Requirements
  • 1 year experience working with both electronic and continuing resources.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities.
Managerial responsibilities
  • May supervise one student assistant.
Other Skills & Abilities Reqd
  • Ability to interpret bibliographic data accurately and to learn and follow procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems in library electronic and continuing resources, cataloging and order records.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work closely with a wide variety of people and tasks.
  • Ability to type/do word processing, with accuracy.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of accuracy.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to spend extended periods standing.
  • Sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, and routinely lifting up to 25 pounds may also be required.
  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine and other office equipment.

Job Summary  

This is a temporary, part time public services position at the library Circulation Desk.   Duties include interacting and engaging with library visitors, maintaining patron records, circulating library materials, performing routine clerical work and related duties as required.



 Circulation desk duties include but are not limited to:

  • Consult daily with supervisor, reporting news, events, facilities or other issues that impact users.
  • Supervise and train student assistants as needed.
  • Provide services pleasantly, quickly, and accurately, following through on unsolved problems
  • Circulate material from the main, special, reserve and audiovisual collections in accordance with the library circulation procedures.
  • Help students locate materials, or direct them to other staff.
  • Provide information and forms for various library services including room reservations, materials recommendations, holds, and other requests.
  • Collect money from overdue fines and other fees and charges.
  • Assist patrons with the photocopiers, and take care of minor maintenance of photocopier and printer operations: paper, toner, paper jams etc.
  • Notify NUHS contacts when repairs or service are needed on computers, photocopiers and printers.
  • Organize books on cart in shelf order

Other Duties

  • Assist with routine new book processing, which can be done at the circulation desk
  • Field phone calls for campus departments
  • Contribute library reports as needed.
  • Assist with data entry and other library projects as assigned by supervisor.
  • Monitor library noise level and remind offenders when noise interferes with studying
  •  Advise supervisor of unmet needs that interfere with good service
  • Other duties as assigned and qualified.



  • Library Technical Assistant certification or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work well with the public
  • Ability to use basic computer programs.
  • Flexible schedule to cover emergencies


  • Enthusiastic user of new technology.
  • Interest and ability to learn and provide help with computer programs

Average 14 hours per week over a 4 week rotation. Regular shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays with possibility to substitute for more hours.

Position Description:


  1. Answer directional, ready reference, and assignment-based or career-related research questions, as well as basic computing and software application questions, for patrons in the Library, on the telephone and via email reference service.
  2. Assist and instruct patrons (students, faculty, and community members) in the use of the Library website to search catalogs, indexes and databases, and the Web; in finding and retrieving information in the Library’s print and electronic resources; and in locating library materials available in the College of DuPage Library and other libraries.
  3. Assist and instruct patrons in selecting appropriate resources and tools, creating search strategies, and finding and retrieving information in the Library’s print and electronic resources, including special collections such as the Philanthropy Center and the College and Career Information Center.
  4. Assist and instruct students in paper writing mechanics and style (MLA, APA, etc.) as well as document formatting and layout.
  5. Assist patrons in selecting and accessing appropriate software from the applications programs listed on the Library menu screen. Answer basic questions about the programs and refers patrons to software manuals for in-depth information. Assist in printing documents.
  6. Monitor and enforce Library Policies and Rules of Behavior.

Minimum Qualifications:

One (1) year library work experience.  Reference/public services experience.  Proficiency in written and spoken English.  Library Technical Assistant Certificate and Two (2) years of college.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two (2) years library work experience.  Reference/public services experience.  Proficiency in written and spoken English.  Library Technical Assistant Certificate and Associates Degree.
