Job Title: Youth Services Assistant – Part Time
Hours: Part-time position: Mondays, 1-9pm; Wednesdays, 9am-1pm; Thursdays, 4-9pm, Fridays 9–5; a weekend rotation of every fourth Saturday (9–5) Sunday (11:45am–5pm).
$16.79 per hour
Position Description: 

The primary responsibilities in this part-time position include assisting patrons ages birth through grade 12 and their caregivers with reference and reader’s advisory, helping patrons with digital services on their devices or ours, and general departmental duties as assigned. Programming needs are for children from birth to grade 5. You’ll be part of a team of ten other full and part-time department members you can call upon for creative input and experience.

The candidate chosen for this position will have a skill set that includes:

  • excellent judgment and analytical skills to determine how to best fulfill patron needs
  • strong computer and technology skills including using Microsoft Office products, tablets, and ereaders
  • knowledge of the library’s digital services available to Youth Services patrons
  • the ability to navigate a variety of search engines
  • the ability to recommend library materials to children, teens, and classroom teachers
  • ability to evaluate how emerging technology can enhance library services to the public

Works under the supervision of the Youth Services Manager. The Tinley Park Public Library serves both the communities of Tinley Park and Orland Hills with a combined population of 63,852 residents. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent oral communication and writing skills, as well as the ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.

Qualifications must include:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years of experience working with children in a library or classroom environment
  • Experience planning and presenting age-appropriate activities for children in grades 5 or younger
  • Access to transportation
  • Evening and weekend hours required
