Job Title: Public Services I – Circulation
Part Time
16-18 hours per week, includes some evening and weekend hours
Position Description: 


Under the direction of the Public Services Manager or designee, this employee understands, adheres to and follows the mission and values of the Wauconda Area Library within the Circulation area.  They are responsible for providing exceptional customer service in a friendly and professional manner and for creating a positive library experience.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide friendly and enthusiastic customer service on the telephone, in person, and when using electronic communication.
  • Responsible for the efficient handling of incoming and outgoing materials.
  • Represent the Library’s brand by providing a positive image at all times.
  • Demonstrate excellent problem solving skills, flexibility and sound and independent judgment.
  • Comfortably use and explain how to use technology.
  • Troubleshoot library equipment and communicate outages to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to accurately handle money transactions.
  • Effectively resolve patron misunderstandings or complaints.
  • Work productively in a fast paced team environment.
  • Ensure all policies of the Wauconda Area Library are followed.
  • Assist with training other staff members.
  • Assist and implement process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to work productively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to productively communicate with all levels of library staff and management.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage details.
  • Serve on committees as needed and attend library meetings as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate thorough working knowledge of library operations.
  • Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge and ability to train others on Polaris, Microsoft Office and other software and library equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions, work within a team and respond to management direction.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to adjust job duties and schedules as needed.

Education and Experience Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years of library work experience or service related work experience.
  • A combination of relevant work experience and post-secondary education is preferred.

Physical/Other Requirements:

  • Ability to see, walk, sit, stand, speak, and hear.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Dexterity to perform data entry and eye-hand coordination to handle library materials or operating automated equipment.
  • Ability to push 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on your feet and stand for extended periods.
