Description Working in a small special library, the Library Assistant is responsible for maintaining and disseminating ALA Library resources for staff, ALA members, the broader library community, and the general public. Specifically, the incumbent processes items for the collection, both paper and electronic, and collaborates with senior library staff to share in-house and external resources with staff and member libraries to further library’s mission.

The incumbent is also the front line agent responding to routine inquiries and referring others as appropriate. Office management tasks, such as billing, ordering, statistical reporting, and file maintenance are also recurring responsibilities of this role.

Starting salary range from the mid 30’s; negotiable based on experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes paid vacation and a retirement annuity.

Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) to gain a mature understanding of libraries and how they work.

Specific training in library specific practices; 1-2 years of LTA or paraprofessional library experience highly preferred; some copy cataloging experience preferred

Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to be able to deal effectively with callers and to respond to inquiries via e-mail, fax, and e-mail concisely and accurately

Ability to grasp an ever-changing array of software programs, specifically: Outlook (e-mail), web content management system, Microsoft Office suite, Worldshare Management Services (ILS), EBSCO reference databases, Google searches, web mark-up programs, as well as general office equipment operation, including routine PC and printer troubleshooting, copiers, fax machine
