Position Description: 

Do you like to keep things organized? Do you like to know where everything is? Then being a Circulation Page at the Highland Park Public Library might be just the job for you! No day is exactly the same – different materials, different people – but the skill set remains the same. Join the library’s team – contribute ideas for future projects, work closely with people who love connecting people with the world of ideas.
Duties: Shelve, sort and shift library materials (print and non-print) onto shelves or display units, and shelf-read materials – arranging books and other materials in correct order on the shelves. Shift materials so that materials remain accessible, attractive and orderly. Empty book bins or other returned materials receptacles and desensitize specified materials.
Requires: Ability to sort materials alphabetically and in a Dewey Decimal sequence, familiarity with computer operations, ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Requires visual discrimination and the ability to read spine labels, the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and the ability to interact and communicate with people of all ages. Must be available for open shifts.

SUMMARY 

Under the direct supervision of the building principal, this position is expected to foster a love of reading, and to support the goals of District 200. This position is responsible to ensure that each student will acquire and apply knowledge and skills for lifelong learning in a global community. The Library Learning Center Director works in collaboration with building administrators, teachers, and staff to deliver curriculum and meet the diverse needs of all students. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Teaching and Learning Responsibilities

  • Performs the duties of information specialist, teacher, and instructional consultant as a specialist in learning resources and strategies; information location, evaluation, and use, and the design of instruction.
  • Promotes reading and literature appreciation through activities such as book talks, displays, and special events.
  • Utilizes current research and methods in areas of technology, teaching, learning, and library and information science.
  • Collaborates with teachers to integrate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation into the curriculum.
  • Collaborates with teachers in developing activities which stress interdisciplinary strategies.
  • Assists teachers and students in using information resources and incorporating information skills into classroom curriculum.
  • Exercises leadership and serves as a catalyst in the instructional program, providing various services to students and staff.
  • Uses a variety of materials and activities to stimulate and maximize learning to help students achieve educational and personal goals.
  • Maintains an attractive and inviting physical environment which allows for enriched learning experiences and intellectual growth.

Information Access Responsibilities

  • Selects materials and technology which support the district’s educational philosophy and curriculum.

Duties
The Resource Center Aide is responsible for the circulation of library materials. This includes lending materials to students/staff as well as collecting borrowed material. Additional duties include:

  • Sort and reshelf library materials.
  • Assist students looking for information in library books, periodicals or via the Internet.
  • Assist students at computer terminals. This includes helping students with collecting research material online, organizing research papers, creating resumes, creating email accounts and posting online applications.
