GENERAL DESCRIPTION
During the fall and spring semesters, the Circulation Assistant will oversee library services during overnight and early morning hours, with weekend or daytime hours as needed. During the summer semester, the Circulation Assistant will work scheduled hours in support of building operations and circulation department projects. This position is responsible for the supervision of student assistants, the enforcement of library policy, and maintaining a secure building environment conducive to study and research.

Key Responsibility 1
Oversees Circulation Desk and circulation student assistants and supervises them in performing their nightly tasks. Ensures that all circulation functions are carried out in a professional manner. During high-traffic times, such as mid-terms, or study and finals’ weeks, may supervise more student assistants as schedules demand.

Key Responsibility 2
Follows and enforces all Circulation, Public Services and Library policies. Communicates library policies to patrons verbally in the library and via phone and email as necessary. Collects statistical information for library data files, assists with the creation or compilation of statistical reports, works with patron accounts.

Key Responsibility 3
Responsible for managing building issues in the evening and early morning hours including communicating with Facilities Department, Library Staff and Public Safety on building alarms, lights, restrooms and reporting on other building maintenance or service factors daily.

Key Responsibility 4
As schedules demand, may be responsible for the timely opening and/or closing of the library.

Communications:
Position requires a set of well-developed written and verbal communication skills in order to perform key responsibilities. Position requires the creation and dissemination of electronic communications to colleagues and patrons. The position requires effective communication with student assistants to supervise work plans and ensure provision of services. Works cooperatively with staff at all IIT libraries and participates in projects as necessary. Promotes the Galvin Library to its internal constituency and to its external university partners.

Customer Service:
Provides service to faculty, students and staff at IIT’s Main campus. Appreciates a multicultural academic and research environment. Maintains a service attitude that improves patron perceptions of the library.

Education & Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree, Library Technical Associate’s degree or comparable experience in an academic library is preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population of faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ability to supervise student personnel with flexibility but within the boundaries of established policies.
