Duties and Responsibilities – Oversees all aspects of binding activities, including preparing library materials for commercial binding, updating of records in Loyola’s online library system, ExLibris Alma, for materials being bound or repaired, in-house pamphlet binding, and physical processing of bound materials. Set priorities for these activities to meet binding and processing deadlines.

– Manages digitization of library materials for inclusion in eCommons, Loyola’s institutional repository. Coordinates processes from retrieval of print items to scanning, reviewing and correcting errors, to completed scanned documents ready for addition to the eCommons.

– Hires, trains, schedules and supervises part-time student employees in bindery and digitization duties (approximately five to six student employees). Creates and updates procedures and workflows as needed. Monitors student wage budget.

– Organizes periodical issues for binding, investigates and resolves problems with missing issues, call numbers, and locations; enters binding data on the bindery software ABLE. Updates holdings information for bound periodicals in Alma following national standards and local guidelines for display of serials holdings information.

– Serves as a resource person for procedures and guidelines in conservation treatment of newly acquired and damaged library materials. Systematically assesses damaged books to determine most effective method for preservation and repairs. Communicates regularly with staff at Cudahy, Lewis and Rome libraries to ensure that materials are bound correctly and in a timely manner.

– Serves as the library contact person for the commercial binder; monitors the performance of the commercial binder and evaluates bindery services as needed. Communicates with the commercial binder regarding schedules of binding shipments and special instructions.

– Monitors bindery expenditures and recommends budget adjustments as appropriate. Responsible for ordering preservation supplies, and monitoring of equipment maintenance as needed.

– Assists the Serials & Electronic Resources Librarian in setting goals and priorities for the Bindery/Preservation unit.

– Assists Loyola students, faculty, and staff in the binding of personal theses and dissertations.

– Works on library committees and participates in continuing education opportunities as available.

Minimum Education or Experience Bachelor’s degree and two to three years of library experience required.
Computer Skills: Working knowledge of MS office suite required. Familiarity with a library automation system is preferred.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Library experience required; library technical services experience preferred. Ability to independently prioritize and meet deadlines. Strong organizational skills. Experience with archival repair or ability to work well with hands in a similar craft or trade. Good interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills. Strong commitment to customer service. Ability to occasionally do fairly strenuous physical work (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.). Experience with supervising students assistants preferred. Familiarity with a library automation system is preferred.
