Job Title: Temporary Library Assistant – Overnight Manager
Part Time
Hours: 3 – 5 days per week, Sunday – Fridays, 11:45 p.m. – 8 a.m. during fall and spring semesters.
Position Description: 

This position requires the exercise of judgment in the application of the Library’s code of conduct and other policies to maintain the security of the facility and safety of patrons. Maintain safety by periodic inspection and monitoring access.

Hours:  3 – 5 days per week, Sunday – Fridays, 11:45 p.m. – 8 a.m. during fall and spring semesters.

Start date:  Monday, October 19, 2015.

Pay rate:  $15.12/hour


  • maintains safety and security in the Richard J. Daley IDEA Commons during overnight hours:
    • enforces the Library’s Code of Conduct and policies for use of the IDEA Commons
    • conducts periodic inspections to assure the safety of patrons in the IDEA Commons
    • monitors access to the IDEA Commons to ensure that only UIC-affiliated patrons are in the space during designated times
  • performs basic query responses and finding activities for library patrons
  • performs general clerical activities including general office duties and office support services as needed: operating equipment, gathering and providing information, processing orders and forms, maintaining documents, files and records, documenting the use and distribution of library materials


1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. Any combination totaling 1 year from the following categories:

(a) work experience in a library or equivalent setting performing duties comparable to those described in Level I of this series.

(b) college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent

●30 semester hours equals six months

●60 semester hours or an Associate’s degree equals one year

Amounts of education or experience less than those listed above should be converted to decimal equivalents and added together when computing combinations of the different types of preparation.

Skill in communicating effectively with and working well with a diverse staff and user population

Skills in performing effective customer service

Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in decision making

Ability to work with minimal supervision
